Welding Instructions:

1. Thoroughly clean the area you’re about to weld by brushing the base with stainless steel brush until it becomes shiny.
2. Then evenly heat the area to be welded.
3. As you heat, rub the rod vigorously against the heated area until the rod starts flowing.
Caution: Never apply heat directly to the rod as it will crumb, and if you manage to melt the rod directly, the weld will be easily breakable. Remember, melting the rod directly is a wrong way, and makes crumby welds.

Tried it and not bad if you know how to weld then you know how to use this. It takes time to heat up your metal be for applying this to it but you have to be patient. What a time saver! While i have a tig welder for aluminum welding often brazing is all I need. I have used silicone bronze brazing rod when the steels are unknown. I finally decided to try this aluminum brazing rod. Using either a propane torch or Mapp gas torch is sufficient. I prefer Mapp gas because you get the aluminum up to the 730 F melt point of the flux core aluminum rod. Remember, this is NOT ALUMINUM WELDING IT IS BRAZING. Steps are simple. 1. Clean aluminum with a stainless brush. 2. Wipe cleaned with acetone or brake cleaner. 3. Clamp the pieces together. 4. Heat aluminum parts you are brazing to 730 F. DO NOT APPLY TORCH FLAME TO THE ROD. 5. Swipe the rod on the joint to see if it is hot enough to melt and flow the aluminum brazing rod. Torch removed 6. Once it flows you drag the aluminum brazing rod across the joint. 7. Let cool with no water. 8. Congratulate yourself. You have brazed aluminum.

I fixed my 95 gallon fuel tank. It had two 8” cracks. Welded both. It’s been about a month. So far no leaks. I have tried 5-6 times with jb welding, but it kept cracking and leaking. These sticks worked out fine.

This rods are amazing for cast aluminum. I just saved a 500 dollar casting (if it holds long term). It does have a steep learning curve, and it requires a lot more heat than I thought. For larger castings, MAPP gas would be better, but a good propane torch will get it done. The casting I repaired was about 12" by 10" with about a 3" piece broken off. It took about 15min to heat enough to braze with the rods since aluminum looses so much heat quickly. Overall I'm pleased with the results.

If you can solder you can use these. One thing to keep in mind is that, unlike soldering, they don't use capillary action to fill small areas between pipes. You almost have to fillet weld the pieces together by literally rubbing the rod on the hot parts. If you don't feel the rod physically rub the part, the braze may not stick and you'll get an undercut in your braze. Make sure the pieces are clean and hot enough before trying to braze. I used sand paper to clean the areas before brazing. I also used a plain propane torch to heat up the pieces. There is also NO need for any type of flux because these rods are made of aluminum and zinc.
